We hope you have been keeping up with our web page recently. There have been some beautiful trout caught in our pond, lots of them are over two pounds and a few guests have even brought in some three pounders! Power bait seems to be the fish favorite right now. At this time, we have stocked a total of 3,450 pounds of trout in our private pond averaging 300 pounds per week. Let’s go fishing! We are happy to report that we have some of the cutest ducklings in Red River that like to stay on our pond. They are growing fast and are pretty fun to watch.
This was Rio Colorado’s 75th Fourth of July celebration and we had a blast! We had another successful celebration and parade, including having our own log cabin in the parade, complete with a few wet “surprises” for special people. The cabin proudly sits in our play area now for the children to enjoy. Our guests had a wonderful time with new and old friends, and family as we all celebrated our nation’s freedom. Some of our Owners were able to come visit and enjoy the parade this year too!(Shown left to right Steve and Carolyn Griggs and Sid and Becky Griggs) It’s always great to have them visit and to talk about the past year’s improvements and make plans for the future.
Following the July 4th celebration, July 11th-13th provided more excitement with Michael Martin Murphy’s Westfest at Brandenburg Park. This event was full of great musicians, authentic mountain men, Native American Dancers, a trail ride up Bitter Creek led by Murphy, himself, western dancers, art, jewelry and crafts at different areas on the grounds. It was quite a treat for everyone.
The ski lift is staying busy this summer, as many people love to take the relaxing ride to the top of the ski area and hike, play Frisbee golf, and enjoy snacks at the Ski Tip Restaurant. We enjoy playing tourist occasionally as well and were able to take our Niece Zoey on a chairlift ride while she was visiting us this summer. It was her first time and she had a blast!
We are also seeing lots of recreational vehicles in the area anxiously exploring the many trails Red River has to offer. If trekking out on your own is not your thing, the tour jeeps have been hopping the past few weeks as they take visitors to various wonderful areas in and around our national forest. Square dancing hit the Community House recently and even if you don’t dance, watching those couples maneuver the dance calls with so much knowledge and fun (and a few mess ups too) is quite entertaining. Speaking of the Community House, there are many events scheduled that do not cost anything to attend, from Movies on the Yard, to line dancing, nature hikes, and more, there is rarely a dull moment at the Community House.
Even though it is nearing the end of July, there is still lots of summer fun to be had. The next big event is Larry Joe Taylor’s Hot Chili Days Cool Mountain Nights (August 14-17) a 4-day music festival featuring LJT and a few of his friends. The event also features a huge chili and BBQ competition that takes place in Brandenburg Park with lots of cooks, food and drink vendors and music throughout the day. The following week August 22-25 is the 45th Annual Bluegrass & Traditional Music Festival. in addition to live music with over 10 artists, there will also be workshops, jam sessions, and vendors. September is full of great events too, Wags and Wine Festival, Century Tour Bike Race, Aspencade and the Folk Festival and of course Oktoberfest in early October finishes off our Summer and Fall activities. Don’t forget the Fall foliage is usually in peak conditions late September to early October as well.
